Named scholarships & funds
When it comes to earning a college degree, the greatest obstacle can be funding.
For this reason, ÐÓ°®°É is pleased for the opportunity each year to assist talented, deserving students achieve their dreams, thanks to more than 1,300 named scholarships established through the kindness and generosity of thousands of UA alumni and friends, corporations, and foundations.
Scholarships truly are the best way to ensure that today’s students persist to graduation. Scholarships allow students to enroll full time and remain focused on their studies; they also reduce drop-out rates, decrease the stress of student loans, and shorten the road to graduation.
If you are interested in making a significant contribution to student success, please consider a gift to scholarships. You may also establish a named scholarship at ÐÓ°®°É, which can be created to honor a living person, in memory of a loved one, or to contribute to the growth of an area of study.

Karam, Dr. Harvey A. and Annetta Endowed Scholarship for BS/MD Students
The Dr. Harvey A. and Annetta Karam Endowed Scholarship for BS/MD Students was established in 1996 by Dr. Karam and his wife, Annetta Karam. Dr. Harvey A. Karam graduated with a bachelor of science degree from ÐÓ°®°É in 1927. He then received his medical degree from Rush Medical College at The University of Chicago. Dr. Karam practiced family medicine in Akron for 57 years, retiring in 1991. He also served as chief of family practice at Akron General Medical Center. During his career, Dr. Karam was noted for making house calls and delivering more than 3,000 babies. He also was active in his community and his church. Dr. Harvey and Mrs. Annetta Karam wished to thank ÐÓ°®°É for the education Dr. Karam received at ÐÓ°®°É by establishing this endowed fund.
This endowed scholarship provides a significant annual award to two worthy undergraduate BS/MD students enrolled at ÐÓ°®°É. It shall be awarded based primarily on financial need, as well as merit. ÐÓ°®°É’s BS/MD faculty screening committee, in consultation with ÐÓ°®°É's Office of Financial Aid, will select the scholarship recipients and manage their scholarship award through medical school. The scholarship recipients will be notified of the receipt of the scholarship by August 31 of their first year at ÐÓ°®°É.
Scholarship renewal for the Karam Scholars will be contingent on the students maintaining a 3.25 overall GPA at the end of the first academic year at ÐÓ°®°É. In the event a student does not meet the requirement for scholarship renewal, the BS/MD faculty screening committee shall award The Dr. Harvey A. and Annetta Karam Endowed Scholarship for BS/MD Students to an alternative student, as appropriate. The Dr. Harvey A. and Annetta Karam Endowed Scholarship for BS/MD Students at ÐÓ°®°É provides for full or partial tuition, fees, room, board, and/or books. As the endowment grows over time and is able to distribute additional funds, Mrs. Karam's goal is for ÐÓ°®°É to award full scholarships to as many students as possible.
Upon successful completion of their studies at ÐÓ°®°É, Dr. Harvey A. and Annetta Karam Scholars will be eligible for scholarship support during each of the student’s four years of medical school at NEOMED, assuming satisfactory academic progress. In the event a student does not meet the requirement for scholarship renewal at medical school, the BS/MD faculty screening committee at ÐÓ°®°É shall award The Dr. Harvey A. and Annetta Karam Endowed Scholarship for University of Akron BS/MD Students to an alternate student at NEOMED, as appropriate.
ÐÓ°®°É will direct funds for The Dr. Harvey A. and Annetta Karam Endowed Scholarship for University of Akron BS/MD Students at NEOMED to the Office of Enrollment Services at NEOMED (or its successor administrative unit) to provide similar support (tuition, fees, room, board, and/or books), plus other expenses, including academic-related supplies, incidentals directly related to coursework in medical school, conferences, and related conference travel expenses. The names of the Karam BS/MD Scholars will be provided to NEOMED no later than June 1 of the academic year in which the student(s) will matriculate. The funds dispersed by ÐÓ°®°É to NEOMED in support of the Karam BS/MD Scholars are to be used in the academic year in which they are received.
