Graves, Patricia L. and J. Harvey Palliative Care Training Fund
The Patricia L. and J. Harvey Graves Palliative Care Training Fund was established as a non-endowed fund in January 2018 by Mrs. Patricia L. Graves in memory of her beloved husband, J. Harvey Graves. Mr. Graves, former CEO of Empire Wholesale Lumber Company, passed away November 10, 2006 at Summa Health System’s Akron Hospital’s Palliative Care Unit. Mrs. Graves’ heart was touched by the kindness of and excellent care provided by the palliative care nurses.
It is Mrs. Graves’s desire to support ÐÓ°®°É’s College of Health Professions’ faculty by providing funding for palliative care training. Through training the faculty on current standards in palliative care, faculty will be able to share their knowledge with many nursing students.
A former University of Akron student, Mrs. Graves, a member of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority, was awarded an honorary doctorate of Humane Letters Degree from UA. In April 1997, she was appointed to ÐÓ°®°É Board of Trustees by Ohio Governor George Voinovich and served as Chairman of the Board for 2003-2004. In appreciation and honor of her distinguished service, Mrs. Graves was named Chairwoman Emeritus of ÐÓ°®°É Board of Trustees in 2004.
Active in many community organizations, including Children’s Hospital Medical Center of Akron’s Women’s Board, Akron Golf Charities Foundation, the Akron Community Foundation and the Akron Art Museum, Mrs. Graves demonstrates that a community is only as good as its members help it become. Indeed, Mrs. Graves has made a lifetime commitment of service to her community and her University.
Administration of this fund will be by and at the discretion of the director of the School of Nursing in the College of Health Professions for palliative care training expenses and education of RN-BSN faculty and students of the School of Nursing’s RN-BSN program. No disbursement shall take place without the approval of Mrs. Graves or her representative.
